Background to Vlame-SA Occupational Health & Safety
The first office of Vlame OHS was opened in 2005 in Cape Town; the company expanded to Mosselbay in 2006. During this time the

experience.
During 2008, it was decided to expand the company into a national group with franchises in all 9 provinces. This allows the
company to provide services to clients with national interests. It was also decided to extend the scope of the company's
operation to include all industries.
Franchises are currently operating in the Western Cape, Free State, Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, with the head office situated in
Somerset West. Marketing and sales in the remaining 5 provinces will commence early in 2010.

Vlame Occupational Health & Safety Philosophy
We believe that all employers have a moral, legal and financial reason for safeguarding the health and safety of employees and
others affected by their activities. Extensive experience of accidents on sites (often fatal) has illustrated the financial cost
of site closure, the huge negative impact on staff morale that can follow a serious accident and the possibility of individuals
or employers being prosecuted for their acts or omissions.
Our experience with existing and previous clients, projects and contractors suggests that regular visits (at least weekly) are
in the best interests of a project of this nature. Although the Regulations state that inspections of the site must be done at
least monthly, this is only a legal minimum and, we believe, would not necessarily address ongoing, and often serious, safety
concerns on site in a timeous manner - particularly where public safety issues and contractor safety coordination issues are of
prime concern.
Visiting on a regular basis establishes a constructive relationship with the clients, which serves health and safety goals far
better than visiting on a monthly basis. We have established good working relationships with contractors on numerous projects
and "held their hands" where appropriate in order to guide them through the safety documentary process. Many clients have had
their first experience of the Regulations through dealing with our company as Client Agent or Safety Advisor and it is a process
we are familiar with and comfortable with.
Visiting on a frequent basis offers the best opportunity for training in Regulation requirements and monitoring that safety,
particularly on public safety matters, is being rigorously followed.
Vlame Occupational Health and Safety Response
We have been in communication with the local Department of Labour about the Approved Inspection Authority (A.I.A) requirement and
have been informed: that it is not as yet a legal requirement that the client agent be an A.I.A; and that as matters now stand
there is no A.I.A status available for safety consultants to apply for client agent or general safety consultancy work. It is a
development that we warmly welcome though, as it will be a means of regulating our industry professionally. We have initiated
enquiries on how we can apply for this newly required A.I.A status when it becomes available and we have no doubt that with our
experience and qualifications we will qualify as an A.I.A. However, at present we await the procedure on how to do this from the
Department of Labour. We are strong and verbal advocates for the general regulation of the industry, to ensure that no lives are
lost where this could have been prevented.
